An oil change is one of the easiest jobs to price-check. The cost breaks down simply: oil (number of litres × price per litre) plus filter plus 30–45 minutes of labour. Full-synthetic oil typically costs $8–$12 per litre; a TESLA with a 5-litre sump costs $40–$60 in oil alone. Total should be $60–$120 for most cars. Red flags: being charged for significantly more than the specified oil capacity, or being upsold an engine flush or additive on a car that has been serviced regularly — these are rarely necessary and are high-margin upsells.

An oil change is one of the jobs most suited to an independent garage. Any competent mechanic can use the correct oil specification (printed on the filler cap or in the owner's manual) and the correct filter. Dealers charge a significant premium — often 50–100% more — for the same oil, the same filter and the same 30-minute job. The only advantage of a dealer oil change is maintaining a full dealer service history stamp, which has some value for certain TESLA models when reselling. Specification matters more than brand. Your TESLA will specify a viscosity grade (e.g. 5W-30) and often a performance standard (e.g. ACEA C3, API SP, BMW Longlife-04, MB 229.5). Using the wrong specification can cause oil consumption, seal damage, or on some turbocharged engines, accelerated timing chain wear. Use the specification from your owner's manual, not just any 5W-30. Quality brands like Castrol, Mobil 1, Liqui-Moly and Pennzoil all produce oils meeting specific manufacturer approvals — check the bottle matches the approval listed for your TESLA.

A top-up adds a small amount of oil to bring the level back to maximum when it has dropped between services — it does not change the old oil. An oil change drains and replaces the entire oil volume, along with the filter, removing contaminants, acids and wear particles that accumulate in old oil. A top-up is fine as an interim measure but cannot substitute for a full change. Engines that consume oil between services still need their full change at the scheduled interval, plus top-ups in between to keep the level correct.

At 0.5–1.5 hours of labour this is a relatively straightforward repair. A competent home mechanic with the right tools could attempt it, but a professional will road-test the car and inspect surrounding components to make sure everything is in order.
